Similar in colour and appearance to European oak. The sapwood of American white oak is light coloured and the heartwood is light to dark brown. The heartwood varies from rich red to reddish brown and will darken on exposure to light. In contrast the sapwood is creamy white. The wood has a fine uniform straight grain, smooth texture, and can contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. Also known as Black Cherry.
