How to specify or order natural timber veneers |
Considerations The first step in selecting and using veneers for your project is to consider the following: Are there specific environmental objectives within the project? If so, you will need to look at the range of species on offer in that grade, i.e. FSC products for Green Star rating points. Veneer Panels P/L is certified (Chain Of Custody) to supply the range of FSC veneers and FSC board products. Do you require certain colour, character and consistency within the overall project? To ensure that you get the best results on your project, Veneer Panels P/L offer a reference service which allows you to sample your selected species. The objective is to achieve consistency with your project. This reference will also help to co-ordinate your veneer selection amongst various contractors. VP Surface Solutions can sequence match and side match the veneers subject to area required for the project and area of log or flitch available to do the job, this allows the veneered panels to flow where butt joined together ie; wall linings etc. Following your contact with Veneer Panels P/L with this service it is best to note the reference or log number and the representative you have been communicating with on your specification. What sort of appearance will the grain provide? The type of cut and grain pattern of the veneer can give you a different look in the same species. Rotary Cut veneers are generally used in plywood manufacturing and give the species a very broad/plain appearance. Whereas Crown Cut (C/C) veneer offers a broad cathedral pattern and Quarter Cut (Q/C) and Rift Cut tends to be more linear. Crown Cut and Quarter Cut veneers are readily available in "Select Grade" veneers. |

How do you want the leaves matched to make the veneered face appear on the panel? The veneer leaves will be laid in a specific configuration to create the layon. As an industry standard Book Matched will be used. Slip Matched, Reverse Slip Matched and Mismatched or Random Matched are other options and need to be specified. |
Will I need long length veneer for the project? The standard pressed lengths of most veneers are 2.4m and 2.7m long. Some species are available in longer length and subject to availability. Grain direction for the project Grain direction, i.e. Long Grain (vertical) or Cross Grain (horizontal) will also provide a particular look to your project. It is best that your specification addresses this, and at the time of order may be called up as 2400 x 1200 (long grain) or 1200 x 2400 (cross grain). The first measurement of sheet size always refers to the length of the grain. |
Quarter Cut veneers best suit horizontal (cross) grain applications, however if crown
cut veneer is to be used, reverse slip matched will provide even appearance
left to right. You will need to specify substrate, grade and thickness for the project. Substrates can be selected from a range of materials ie: particle boards, MDF, plywood and laminate, all available in different grades and thicknesses. Veneer Panels P/L can also bond veneer to VPFlameSTOP fire retardant board where fire resistance is required. Where curved work is required Veneer Panels P/L can bond to HP laminate or lay up 1.5mm ply. Where capping and thicker edging is required L.V.E. (laminated veneer edging) can be pressed in your nominated species. The table below shows a cross selection of different substrates, grades and thicknesses. A range of sheet sizes are available in the listed products. Add thickness of veneers to both faces. For example - 16mm board + 0.5 veneer + 0.5 veneer = 17mm finish (except in the case of 1.5mm plywood, made up of 3 layers 0.5 veneer) |

Which surface on the panels is most visual? You will need to nominate if the veneered board is seen good two sides (G2S) or will a down grade back (DGB) of same species suffice. Where the back of sheets are unseen i.e.; wall paneling, ceiling panels etc, any back or BAMO ( back at manufacturers option ) back can be nominated. What area of the select veneer will be required for the project? What area of the select veneer will be required for the project? The m2 area of visual (select) veneer will need to be estimated. You will need to consider which panels are seen both sides, particularly if your selection is limited due to availability of suitable veneer. Veneer Panels P/L can provide the same veneer on a range of different substrates, grades and thicknesses to allow your project to work consistently. |

How to place an order The order addresses who it is made out to and marks attention to the representative involved. It then covers detail of business from, contact and phone of the business, the project, reference (veneer reference or log #) if applicable, the company order#, if green star points certification required, the delivery details, when required, and if previously quoted, using the quote reference number or name. Quantity, sheet size, thickness, substrate and grade, grain direction (long or cross grain), face species and cut, species and grade for the back of the material and the price if quoted. You also have the option of sanded or un-sanded if required. (Please note - Cross Grain will be un-sanded). |
